Abstract

Current technology¢¥s potential to prolong and sustain life raises profound questions of quality versus sanctity of life.
One of the most highly debated legal-ethical issues in the administration of healthcare concerns the right of patients or their surrogates to refuse life-sustaining treatment. Professional ethics for nurses requires members to practice with compassion and to respect human dignity and the patient¢¥s autonomy. Because autonomy is a basic human right based on society¢¥s principle of self-determination.
The decision to withdraw life support incorporates the two ethical standards of substituted judgement-where an attempt is made to determine the patient¢¥s preferences based on previous oral or written statements- and making a decision based on protection of patient welfare, taking into account such factors as suffering and quality/length of life.
